Nikkiso supports the world’s first next-gen hydrogen fuel supply system with liquid hydrogen pump skid

28 October 2026

Temecula, Calif. – Nikkiso Clean Energy & Industrial Gases Group (Nikkiso CE&IG) announced today that it has supplied a liquid hydrogen pump skid for the world’s first next‑generation fuel supply system for a hydrogen power generation project.

The project aims to make hydrogen fuel supply more efficient in cogeneration systems (CGS), which produce electricity and thermal energy at the same time. Titled “Technology development to improve the efficiency and performance of the hydrogen fuel supply system in a hydrogen CGS regional model,” it is subsidized by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and jointly led by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (KHI) and Kobe Steel, Ltd.

Nikkiso CE&IG’s liquid hydrogen pump skid is a key component of the project. It pressurizes hydrogen while it’s still in a liquid state which requires significantly less power and cost to operate than compressing gaseous hydrogen. This improves the energy efficiency of the system, while the cold energy generated by an accompanying intermediate fluid vaporizer can also be recovered and used in other applications.

The project marks the first time these technologies have been used together in hydrogen power generation. It supports the scale-up of large-scale hydrogen power generation and regional hydrogen‑based energy systems.

Adrian Ridge, President and CEO of Nikkiso CE&IG, said: “Our products have already been at the forefront of hydrogen’s use across a range of markets and applications including transportation and marine fueling, and our teams have combined that expertise with our experience in gas-to-power solutions.
