Nikkiso cuts hydrogen boil-off at fueling stations thanks to next-generation pump

1 October 2026

Temecula, Calif. – Nikkiso Clean Energy & Industrial Gases Group has today announced an industry-leading solution to high boil-off gas rates at hydrogen fueling stations with the launch of a next-generation reciprocating pump.

The P2KHF pump builds on the success of Nikkiso CE&IG’s P2K pump and tests have demonstrated its capability to pressurize and transfer liquid hydrogen with losses of less than 1%, making it ideal as either a boost pump or a standalone subcooled liquid hydrogen refueling pump.

High boil-off gas rates are an ongoing challenge for hydrogen fueling stations, with loss rates of 20-30% common in the industry. One major stage where losses occur is on the pump discharge line and by using the P2KHF, pump-related liquid hydrogen losses are expected to be cut by seven times more than other solutions, amounting to up to $150,000 in hydrogen saved per pump per year.

When it comes to vehicle fueling operations, the single-stage reciprocating pump design replaces the complexity of traditional multi-stage centrifugal designs. By simplifying this design, the pump delivery time can be shortened by months as well as cutting the cooldown time by more than half of the industry average, saving up to 38.5kg of hydrogen per cooldown.

Emile Bado, President of Nikkiso CE&IG’s Cryogenic Pumps and Expanders Business Unit, said: “High boil-off rates have long been a challenge for hydrogen fueling station operators, and our team has been working tirelessly to find a solution to one of the industry’s biggest hurdles."
